Indian steel importers oppose government to levy additional import tariffs
Date: 25/07/2019

According to the report, the Indian importers and the downstream consumers appealed the Indian prime minister not to levy the additional import tariffs on steel products because this measure might push up the domestic steel product prices. The Indian government currently imposed 10% and 12% import tariffs on imported long products and flat products respectively. Meanwhile, the country also imposed anti-dumping duties on other steel products, including hot-rolled products, cold-rolled products, rebar, wire rod and certain stainless steel products. The Indian government would hold a hearing on July 30th and decided to conduct the investigation of anti-dumping duties on imports of aluminum products and galvanized flat products from Vietnam, China and South Korea. In addition, India was also implementing a survey of anti-dumping duties on imports of certain stainless steel products. It was believed that the safeguard measures would affect the exports of equipment made from certain high-quality steel products, while the additional import tariffs will also trigger the retaliatory action against India from major steel export countries, such as Japan and South Korea.
