Karnataka CM hints at new mining licences
Date: 02/07/2014

The New Indian Express cited Mr Siddaramaiah CM of Karnataka as saying that the state government has decided to restart iron ore mining activities by permitting new mining companies, issuing new licences and renewing the old ones.

Mr Siddaramaian said that “Our government will not encourage, support or allow illegal mining. But not everybody was involved in illegal acts. The misdeeds of a few has brought a bad name to all. So the government has taken a decision to give new mining licences and renew the ones that need renewal, besides allowing new companies to start.”

He said that “The new industrial policy 2014 to 2019 would abolish trade licences for new industries. The new policy is almost final. We have studied policies of other states. Ours will be a progressive, investor friendly policy and the prime objective is generating investment.” He added that “The government will also consider providing special benefits to investments in the industrial sector in the backward Hyderabad to Karnataka region. It is true that the state has not had a balanced industrial growth. It is mostly concentrated in and around Bangalore, Mysore, Hubli-Dharwad and Belgaum.”
