Fast-track likely for stalled projects
Date: 11/08/2014

As the new govt. looks to speed up project implementation, the environment ministry is looking to fast track a clutch of power project, proposals held up for defence related reasons and a few iconic projects like Mumbai’s costal road that will convey positive signals to investors. The initiative has followed new Environment Ministry Prakash Javadekar’s resolve to quicken decision making, as the Modi govt. has set reviving growth and containing inglation as its top political economic target.

Javadekar has had a meeting with Piyush Goyal, the Minister for Power, Coal and Renewable Energy, where specific projects were discussed. More reviews are likely to follow, as the Govt. feels some big ticket projects can help turn the tide. The Ministry has short-listed 20 odd proposals which have crossed the hurdle of the Environment Appraisal Committee and can get early clearance. The Environment Ministry has started consultations with other ministries like Coal, Power, Mining and Steel for taking a call on other pending projects. The Coal Ministry on May 29 launched a new system for online submission of applications for environment clearance.
