Alcoa unveiled at the Technology & Maintenance Council what it claims to be the industry’s lightest weight 14- and 9-inch aluminium wheels. The wheels were forged using Alcoa’s LvL one wheel manufacturing process and weight just 54 lbs (14-inch) and 51 or 59 Ibs (depending on fitment ) for the 9-inch design. “We continue to pursue ways to help our customers benefit from state –of-the-art technology,” said Merrick Murphy, vice-president and general manager, Alcoa Commercial Vehicle Wheels. “Alcoa’s lighter 14-inch wide base and 9-inch wheels are another break through for the industry and one more example of Alcoa’s leadership in innovation.” The 14-inch wide base design shed 4 Ibs from its previous version Alcoa now says that switching from dual steel wheels to the new 14-inch design can reduce 1,800 Ibs from a tractor- trailer combination.
