NISST Develops "Virtual Casting" Software For Foundries
National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) have developed a software for simulation of metal casting. Named 'Virtual Casting,'. The software makes it possible to avoid the hit & trial process at shop floor thereby saving time, effort, energy and wastage of material.
The package can reasonably accurately indicate the locations where shrinkage defects are likely to occur in a given design. The required inputs for the simulation software are specific heat, thermal conductivity, pouring temperature of the molten metal, initial temperature of the mould and a solid model of the casting.
It is aimed to service the small and medium foundry units. It can be very helpful for foundries to design the feeding system & can be used as a virtual laboratory for experimenting with different process parameters.
