India produced 2.36 million tonnes of ferroalloys in 2007-8

It is reported that India produced a record 2.36 million tonnes of ferroalloys in the year ending March 31st 2008 an increase of 18% on the previous year's production.

Exports of ferroalloys at almost 1 million tonnes were the highest ever and earned the country INR 44 billion.

Chromium alloy production up by 18% to 948,300 tonnes while exports grew by 46% to 520,740 tonnes.

Although the ferroalloy industry is plagued by the shortage and high price of raw materials, the boom in bulk alloys may continue as new clusters of industry are established in coastal areas. Here more than 1 million tonnes of new capacity based on imports of raw materials and export of finished products is being developed.
