India may consider hiking coal price - Mr Jaiswal

PTI cited Mr Sriprakash Jaiswal minister of coal as saying that the Indian government may consider increasing the price of coal, depending on the economic situation.

Mr Jaiswal said "With the changes in the economic scenario and price rise in products like petroleum, along with the impact of 6 Pay Commission on Coal India, if required the coal prices could be increased. But for that, I have to speak with the Prime Minister."

He said when asked that about the quantum of price increase, if it happens it will be marginal.

Coal India had last week said that it is planning to increase prices of coal following a hike in wages and salaries of its employees, which has eaten into its bottom line.

International coal prices are higher than the ones in India.
