GM to Invest $63 Million in casting unit

GM's Powertrain Saginaw Metal Casting Operations (SMCO) facility opened in 1918, and is General Motors' largest aluminum producing facility. The plant employs 924 hourly and 167 salaried workers and has an annual wage bill of $100 million.

General Motors will invest $63 million in its Saginaw, Mich., casting plant to produce cylinder heads for 3.6L high-feature V-6 engines by utilizing a new semi-permanent mold process.

The new investment is meant for modernization of the plant and for purchase of new tooling and machinery to support the new casting process. Construction is due to begin in 2009, and is scheduled to be completed in two years time.

According to the GM Powertrain manufacturing manager, Mr. Arvin Jones,The investment would not be possible without the involvement of employees at this facility, who have dedicated themselves to improving the quality of the products and the efficiency of the operations at Saginaw Metal Casting Operations, The efforts of the employees have contributed to GM's competitiveness and the turnaround of the company in North America.

More than 420,000 aluminum engine blocks and more than 1,872,000 aluminum engine cylinder heads were produced at the unit in 2006.
