Eco Friendly Buses for 2008 Olympics in China
Alcoa & Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Company, Ltd, have entered into partnership to use world-class design, materials and manufacturing technologies to develop new energy-efficient, eco-friendly buses for China's growing mass transportation demand. The new design will focus at reduction at GHG by improving energy efficiency & the first lot may be resdy for operation during the 2008 Olympics in China "We realize that reducing the weight of tomorrow's short-and long-range buses will be essential for improving their sustainability," added Mr. Yuxiang, "and that the intelligent application of aluminum is one of best methods possible to achieve such mass reduction.
According to the report by the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research in Germany, which was presented last month at the 2007 China Aluminum and Transportation Conference in Dalian, the reduction in weight by 100 kg in a diesel-powered city bus making several stops will save about 2,500 litres of fuel and significantly reduce GHG emissions over the lifecycle of the buses.
The reduction in weight of buses will be achieved by using advanced aluminium alloys vehicle structural design The reduction in GHG over the lifecycle of buses will more than offset the energy consumed in production of metal.
