DGFT to issue directive on scrap imports shortly

DGFT is likely to issue notification shortly for scrap importers to get their consignments certified so that they do not carry any radioactive material. According to a Commerce Ministry official, the Govt will now prescribe a condition for import of scrap to ensure that the imported scrap will be free from radioactive material.

Official said that a authorised inspection agency would have to certify that the scrap being imported is not contaminated. Certain steel consignments, processed out of imported scrap, to Germany were found to be radio-active contaminated following which the government has taken a serious view on the matter. If situation is not checked immediately, it may adversely affect export from India.
