Coimbatore Foundry strike Enters 2nd Day


The strike of Coimbatore Small Foundries entered the 2nd Day on Tuesday. The Representatives of The Association had meeting with Mr Pongalur N Palanisamy, the Rural Industries Minster & also the MD of TN Small Industries Dev Corpn to apprise them of the situation & demanded that the key raw materials i.e. pig iron, scrap etc be made available to them at reasonable prices through Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corpn. The small and tiny foundries are on strike here demanding steps by the Central and State Governments to control the rising prices of pig iron, coke and scrap.

The strike is also supported by engineering units who depend on the foundries for their requirements of castings Mr P K Subbarayan, MP on Tuesday sought immediate intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to save the foundry industry and find a solution to the 'unprecedent hike' in the prices of raw materials like pig iron, coke and scrap.

In a memorandum to the prime minister, The MP has said that nearly 2000 foundries and 500 pumpset manufacturing units in the district have been closed, affecting the livelihood of about 400,000 workers & resulting in loss of Rs 4 Millions per day in revenues.
