Chinese coke export prices reach new high in April

According to data issued by China's Customs on May 13th 2008, China has exported 1.34 million tonnes of coke and semi coke in April 2008 with an export value of USD 578.899 million.

The average export price was as high as USD 432 per tonne, which reached a new high in history. In January to April 2008 period, China has cumulatively exported 4.28 million tonnes of coke and semi coke, down by 16.6% YoY. The cumulative export value was USD 1,626.02 million, up by 97.6% YoY.

Mr Wang Ling analyst from Umetal.com introduced the reasons. He said that Chinese domestic demand for coke is strong, but the coking coal supply is short, so coke production cannot satisfy the demand from downward industries. Coke price has been increasing rapidly for almost one year. The average landed price of coke from ports in North China to steelworks in South China is as high as CNY 2,800 per tonne at present.

Mr Wang Ling predicted that the supply of coal and coke could be still tight in a short time because China further strengthens the administration on private small sized mines and road transportation. As a result, coke export price may climb up further, while the export volume would remain low.

According to the inspection by the Ministry of Commerce of China, boosted by coke price rise and higher international steel price, Chinese domestic steel price has been rising up continuously. The average steel price in domestic market in April was CNY 5,909 per tonne, up by 2.32% YoY.
