Caterpillar to expand operation in India
Project monitor reported that Caterpillar India Pvt Ltd is setting up its third manufacturing facility in India. The new plant is coming up in Chennai and will add to its 2 existing production facilities at Thiruvallur, an industrial suburb of Chennai and Hosur near Bangalore.
As per report, the company, which is investing INR 800 crore on the expansion plan has entered into a project agreement with the Tamil Nadu government and is identifying land for the new facility.
Mr CK Narayanan facility manager said that "The current production capacity of Caterpillar India is about 1,500 units and the proposed expansion plan will take that figure to 3,000 units to 5,400 units. Apart from the domestic market, the additional capacity is likely to be exported to over 45 locations, especially in the Asia-Pacific region."
The expansion program will enable Caterpillar India to replace old machines with latest ones. The Hosur unit will produce engines and the Chennai unit will make earthmoving equipment, Narayanan stated.
Caterpillar India makes a wide range of equipment that includes excavators, backhoe loaders, construction and mining equipment and engines.
