US September scrap exports up by 52pct YoY

According to US trade statistics, USA's ferrous scrap exports totaled 2,026,000 tonnes in September 2009, up by 52.2% YoY, indicating a year on year increase for two consecutive months.

Of the total, South Korea took the largest quantity of 512,000 tonnes, up by a factor of 3.6 YoY, China the second largest of 385,000 tonnes, up 34.2% YoY and Turkey the third largest of 309,000 tonnes, up by 8.1% YoY.

In January to September 2009 period, US ferrous scrap exports totaled 17,276,000 tonnes, down by 0.9% YoY, averaging 1,920,000 tonnes per month, when they translated into an annualized level of 23,040,000 tonnes.

In the breakdown by main destinations, China ranked first at 5,163,000 tonnes or 29.9% of the total, up by 178.9% YoY, Turkey second at 2,769,000 tonnes or 16.0%, down by 15% YoY, South Korea third at 2,493,000 tonnes or 14.4%, up by 16% YoY, Taiwan fourth at 1,488,000 tonnes or 8.6%, down by 37.2% YoY and India fifth at 1,303,000 tonnes or 7.5%, up by 115.6% YoY.
