78,000 mw power generation may be added by 2012: Montek

New Delhi: India may add 78,000 mw of power generation capacity in the five years to March 2012, Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia has said. "We haven't set the target for the 11th Plan, but we are hoping to be above to add 78,000 mw capacity over five years," he said in an interview to the McKinsey journal. Noting that the performance of power sector is lagging, Ahluwalia said the country has added only 21,000 mw additional power generation capacity in the 10th Plan against the target of 40,000 mw. He further said completion of a large number of ongoing power plants had been delayed and a significant capacity addition would be witnessed in two years with the plants going on stream.
