Ford Closes foundry unit

The production of castings came to an end after about 7 decades at Ford Motor Co.'s Windsor, ON, foundry unit. The unit had been producing cast-iron cylinder heads, master cylinders, cylinders blocks, and crankshafts. Ford announced the closing late last year, based on its decision to "move away from in-house casting operations" - just as in case of Ford's recent decision to discontinue operations at its Cleveland (OH) foundry unit.

The foundry unit in Windsor had been established in 1935, and it had been producing more than 100,000 tons/year of molten metal, producing about 500,000 engine blocks per year for engines. The company's decision to move away from in-house casting operations is based on a thorough analysis of its business model and a need to focus on core operations.

The company offered financial assistance to help employees to retire or train for new careers. It also jointly worked with the government to open an employment counseling and training center for its workers who were affected by the closing of its Windsor plant.
